Rental Rally Tradeshow: March 2-4, 2010
Bakersfield Fairgrounds, Bakersfield, CA

2010 Rental Rally Tradeshow Recap

rentalrallytradeshow It was good! Thanks to the participation and help from many individuals, CRA’s Rental Rally Tradeshow, held March 2-4 at the Kerns County Fairground in Bakersfield was a successful event. Even with the poor economy, there was a good turnout and it was a good time for interaction between vendors and their customers. Even the weather was positive—no rain during show hours!

The tradeshow officially began with Tuesday night’s barbeque tri-tip dinner. BS&E Rents hosted the event at their newest Bakersfield facility and staff and owners did an outstanding job! Thank you to the Phares family, and their very welcoming and friendly staff! Thanks also to the cooks — the food was excellent!

The seminars provided a lot of valuable information. Thank you to our seminar leaders! On Wednesday, Lou Koven of Crime Prevention Program of Southern California lead a seminar about steps owners can take to prevent theft and Dana Thompson of Athens Administrators gave a seminar on how to prevent losses in your business. On Thursday, Kimberly Layton of Elavon provided information on PCI Compliance (click here for a PCI Security Standards Council Flyer). Alex DuBose, CRA vice president, did a great job as the moderator of a round table discussion on rental store management issues. Thank you also to David Duncan of Big Top Rentals for leading the Party Workshop discussion on tent permittings.

Wednesday and Thursday featured exhibits and the outdoor demo area, where attendees could see equipment in action. Thank you to all our exhibitors who were willing to participate even in a poor economy! We appreciate the support for CRA and ask that members support these companies in return —Click here for a list of the exhibitor and here for a list of sponsors mailing.

Wednesday evening featured the onsite Dinner/Dance. Thank you to our sponsors for this event, which included Jenkins Insurance Group (bartender service), Bobcat (appetizers), All American Rentals (the live band), Quality Equipment Rentals (dessert), Bliss Lights (lighting), California Portable Dance Floor Co., Inc. (dance floor), and First Capitol Auction and The Auction Company (goody bags). Thanks also to Jomar Inc., Sullivan Palatek, Aba Daba Rentals, and the Woodward Group. A special thanks goes to Linda Bradley and Big 4 Party for coordinating and producing the Wednesday event. Thank you also to all the ladies from the RV Campout who helped with decorations and setup.

The Wednesday Dinner/Dance theme was “Rolling into Bakersfield” and several attendees brought their own motorcycles to display. Robert Pedersen also contributed “do-rags” for staff and board members to wear, and several attendees got into the spirit of things with biker outfits, tattoos, etc.

Steve Garcia, member of the RSIF committee, held a raffle to raise money for the foundation, which provides scholarships to CRA members and their children who are taking rental-related courses. Steve’s son Lorenzo helped in the RSIF raffle. Earlier that day, Lorenzo had the good fortune to win the small motorbike donated by Toolchex in a booth raffle.

In addition to good food, great music, and enjoyable company, Wednesday evening also featured the presentation of the Bud Loeber and Gartland Awards, honoring people who have shown a remarkable spirit of friendship and helpfulness, and those who have served the rental industry well. Past board members and officers were also honored for their service.

Mike Anderson of Ditch Witch California was presented the Loeber Award by past president Robert Pedersen. Mike is well deserving of the award, as he has supported CRA over the years, sponsoring many territory meetings at various Ditch Witch locations. He has always been a gracious host, providing food, beverages and raffle gifts. His company has always supported CRA and participated in the shows and events. He has also helped raise money for RSIF.

Vicky Blackwell, CRA controller and wife of CRA Executive Director Dale Blackwell, was presented the Gartland Award by Michael Roth of RER Magazine. The award is named for James Gartland, the founder of the magazine. Vicky has been actively involved in CRA for many years, serving on numerous committees, attending most of the territory meetings, volunteering at the  San Diego Golf Tournament, and serving as president of the old Superior Chapter. In addition, she provides continual support for our Executive Director, Dale! Congratulations Vicky, on your well-deserved award!

Finally, CRA would like to again express appreciation to all our show’s sponsors and exhibitors, without whose support there could be no show. Thanks also to the many volunteers and board members who gave of their time to make sure our show would be a good one, and thank you to everyone who took time to attend the show and show their support for our association!
